Symbian's Final Gasp ...

In this morning's CC Nokia CFO Timo Ihamuotila advised that the fourth quarter of 2012 would be "the last meaningful quarter for Symbian" sales. Nokia sold 2.2 million Symbian devices in Q4 slightly down from 2.3 million in Q3, and down YoY from ~18.5m in Q4 2011.

As a long time user of Symbian devices for (primarily) overseas travel starting with the Nokia 6600 Symbian OS v7.0s) in 2004, then the N86 (S60 3E FP2) imaging phone and finally the S^3 N8 I bemoan the passing of Symbian

As a NOK investor, however, this is good news. The Q4 Symbian sell-in consists of a half dozen or so S^3 devices and with the exception of the 808 PureView which represents only a fraction of the Q4'11 Symbian sell-in these devices are highly discounted very low margin devices that have contributed to the negative reported IFRS op margins of Nokia Smart Devices.
