During the tech bubble there was a shortage of supplies of GaAs products so margins were good and demand was growing.

In the current environment margins of GaAs products are just terrible. There are a lot more suppliers and end users are driving hard bargains as a result. You only have to look at the operating model for a supplier like RFMD to see how lousy a business it is.

End users like handset manufacturers are especially cost sensitive and because of the number of handsets that are produced each year (in the 100s of millions) they are looking for extreme price breaks from suppliers.

Even I am a little surprised at how little these assets are worth.
