When there is an attack with one of these the results are usually shocking...that said, banning these weapons and high cap magazines, alone, won't solve the problem. More in required in terms of uniformity of legislation, screening and permitting, controls on private sales, mandated education, and so on.
I don't think it solves more than a couple of percent of the problem, at most. Part of the solution, in theory, would be, as all right-wingers fear, the confiscation of gun. However, there are 300 millions guns out there, and that's a fait accompli. I don't think that you can get rid of those any more than you can get rid of 10 million+ illegal immigrants. (But if I could, I would) So we figure out how to discourage violence. Seems like reducing lead does some of it. Making sure people have productive things to do helps. Reducing income inequality might help. Clearly, some things that have happened over the last 30 years have helped.
