Rick: As you know stocks &, in particular, biotechs have rallied since the year began. In fact, at today’s close, the NBI was up 6.55% YTD. So, for most portfolio stock picks, the initial price would be set higher the later the portfolio was submitted.
For example, in the case of ONTY, it was picked for 8 portfolios: four got the 12/31/12 closing price of $1.92; one (yours) got the 1/2/13 closing price of $2.03; one got the 1/3/13 closing price of $2.04; one got the 1/7/13 price of $2.05; one got the 1/1/13 closing price of $2.31.
However, there were a minority of stocks where it would have been better to get a later price and, unfortunately, a few were in my own portfolio. For example, on 12/31/12 PRTA closed at $7.33, quite a bit higher than the $6.26 price I would have gotten if I had submitted my portfolio at the last minute.
Whether or not the timing of a portfolio submission gave an advantage or disadvantage to a particular contestant, the odds are very low that advantage or disadvantage will make a difference in determining the Contest winner. But, if the Contest winds up being close, I’ll certainly check to see whether portfolio submission timing was a significant factor in determining the winning portfolio.
Good luck!
Peace & good health,
Bulba
