You may meet idiots who would like you to put a sign on your yard that you have a "gun free" house. Even though it would be a lie, I'd be happy to put that because 1. robbers won't break in to your house looking for guns when you aren't home. Secondly, even more important than having guns (which you won't be able to get to, if you have them stored properly, and if you don't have them stored properly- what kind of idiot are you?) is having an alarm company sign. Having an actual alarm is even better. Using it, even better. And install security lights around your house. And, if you are able, or have the money, surveillance cameras- we have them inside and out and not all are easy to see. We can access them from the net day or night. If you combine these simple security measures, which will work whether or not you are home, you are doing a hell of a lot more for your safety and security than the reptards who think everything begins and ends with a gun in their hand.

A few other things that were recommended to us? Plant thorny bushes under windows. Have a light on at all times illuminating your porch. Store cars outside in the driveway, so it looks like someone is always home. Leave a light burning in a room upstairs- with low energy lights it's not a big drain on power.
