Icahn reportedly buys stake in Herbalife
January 16, 2013, 3:32 PM

Activist investor Carl Icahn has bought a “small” stake in Herbalife Ltd. /quotes/zigman/361145 /quotes/nls/hlf HLF -1.79%, according to a report Wednesday in The Wall Street Journal. Read the full story on WSJ.com.

The news is the latest twist in the drama surrounding the nutrition company. The Herbalife investment case has riveted Wall Street ever since two other prominent investors publicized their views of the company. In late December, hedge-fund investor Bill Ackman said he had taken a massive short position in the stock and claimed that Herbalife was a pyramid scheme.

Then, on Jan. 9, another hedge-fund investor Daniel Loeb disclosed that he has bought an 8% stake in Herbalife, pitting him against Ackman. The following day, Jan. 10, Herbalife held a presentation for investors for two and a half hours in an attempt to refute what it called Ackman’s “misrepresentations.” Read more on the Herbalife defense.

The Journal points out that Icahn and Ackman have been at odds for years, with Icahn telling the newspaper last year that “any criticism from Bill Ackman I consider a compliment.” That comment came after Ackman had said at a conference that he had no respect for Icahn.

Stay tuned as activist investors continue to do battle. In the meantime, shares of Herbalife are trading down 1.7% on the day.
