Here are Mike McFarland's instructions for the Biotech Contest of 2000. Looks like the evolution of the contest has been uneven, maybe because having a contest without rules is unworkable. I personally am comfortable with the rules as they've evolved and recognize there's no way to please everybody. Nevertheless, it would sure be nice for everyone to make a commitment to restore the civility, and thus the fun, we had at the beginning:

The winner of this contest has the honor of
choosing a charitable cause that is healthcare
related. At the end of 2000 (the real end of the
millennium as we all know) folks who have pledged
send their checks in to the winners cause. I'll set
the tone in the first post if that was not clear.

Since this is for a good cause no disputes will
be resolved, you don't have to mark down a pledge
amount, you don't even have to pick your charity
yet. Just try to get your top ten biotech picks
down over the next few days--at least by the
tenth of January. If you don't have ten picks,
choose less, choose more, just have some fun.
No less than five picks I think, healthcare and
not biotech is fine too.

Please, no fake charities, good causes please.
