I disagree with both extremes. Apple's position isn't as bad as it would seem, given the huge difference in Android vs. Apple market share or installed base. These metrics overwhelmingly favor Android, but obviously, not all Android users are equal and certainly, not all Android users are equal to iPhone users.

On the other hand, Apple's hold on the high end market is as weak as it has ever been. Samsung is on track to sell 25 million high end units between the S3 and the Note2 in Q4. Android has never had that degree of traction on the high end, where Apple's bread is buttered.

My take is that the sky is not necessarily falling, but Apple already has stiff competition on the high end front and, if they choose to enter it, in the low end arena.
