Yes, 20 miles. That's a long walk for one day. Your mileage may vary. Separation of people leads to shifts in language though of course they use the same foundations. Maori for example is quite different from Japanese, but many words and the sound of the language are the same or similar. In Belgium where we lived 25 years ago, there were noticeable dialect differences from town to town, though of course they didn't rise to the level of being different actual languages. In the same way, linguists in Britain could place people by their language to small geographic areas. Scottish are quite different from English. For hundreds of years, people would live in the same town.

Similarly, english can be traced back to Indian sources [in part]. So can some of my ancestry which no doubt tracked along with the language from east India.
