The $2.1 billion has to be a gross number before the developers cut. Asymco has a pretty good article looking at the overall state of iTunes.

Thinking about it, I wonder where Apple puts the cost of the commercials that entirely feature apps from the iTunes store. I think there are some that dont even mention any product names. That would seem to be a convenient place to stash any extra cash generated by iTunes.
