Which is pretty good given that most of the states near the bottom in terms of growth are among the oldest in the Union... population has been expanding south and west as long as we've been acquiring more territory in the south and west, particularly as transportation and climate control (in buildings) have advanced. New York's population grew a lot until we tightened immigration laws from Europe and Ellis Island became defunct. -Z
