There were many ways to connect with people, BBS (which I used in the late 80's), then CompuServe, etc. Just before I got the Internet, CompuServe introduced Internet access to their members, I believe for a fee.

In 1994, I dumped CompuServe and got an Internet connection using the first version of Netscape. Never looked back.
