There's an amusing thing in Qualcomm's information from the "best places to work" competition. money.cnn.com Minorities. Apparently that's a good thing to measure in companies in the USA these days. By "minorities" I think they mean people with ASTM 4 or more skin colour. [ASTM = American Society for Testing Materials]

Diversity

% minorities
59%

% women
21%

Has nondiscrimination policy
that includes sexual orientation?
Yes

Offers domestic partner benefits
for same-sex couples?
Yes

If they are getting into racism and apartheid, they should break it down into more precise categories. I suspect that Negroes are not so common as Indians. If I went to live there, I would not be counted as a minority even though NZ is really small with few people. It's sun resistance which gets them excited. I have no idea why they get excited about sun resistance in the modern world where people generally work and live indoors and if outdoors we have all sorts of clothing to protect our skin if we want to do so.

The "diversity" nonsense would presumably apply to Barack Obama too even though he has no ancestry of American slaves which is where the silly diversity nonsense arose.

On personal description in job applications, people with ASTM 4 colour can write "Great diversity" alongside PhD from Bangalore university. Bingo, they will be in. People with less than sufficient skin colour must be thinking they should get a 23andMe gene test to demonstrate that although they are not quite up to the good ASTM skin colour test, they have some other pretty good minority genes. They can probably get skin browning by some cunning biologists these days. Have a bath in browning goo and hey presto, instant diversity status.

Also, they seem to be taking a prurient interest in their employees' sexual activities. I don't know what business it is of Qualcomm what the employee does in their personal time if it's legal and won't reflect badly on the company.

I note also that they don't mention a non-discrimination policy against Catholics so perhaps they discriminate against Catholics, or tall people, or short ones, or the left-handed, or .... pick your diversity. They seem to have a thing for women, sex and brown people. I hope they are focused on their actual jobs and not too much on the women and sex.

At 59% minorities, it seems that the diversity is now in the majority, so I wonder what their aim is. Get rid of all of the majority? Have a totally minority company? Or maybe there is some government grant or contract awards process which favours companies with few white people.
