Not a valid assumption. Scientists tend to be apolitical. That is changing, though. With the anti-science bent of the Republican party, more and more are self-identifying as Democrat and fewer ad fewer as a Republican. Still, a large percentage don't identify as anything.

(2) the chart is about the tendency to support government control of the economy.


This is incorrect. DW-NOMINATE measures roll call votes on a host of issues of that particular Congress.
