Apple stores report:

Two trips: Friday evening and Sat afternoon.

Four stores:

Best in Mission Valley – central San Diego wide cross section of people 6000 – 8000 sq ft

Apple Store Fashion Valley Mall – just down the river valley also a wide crosss section – roughly 4000 sq ft

Microsoft Store Fashion Valley mall – about 6 stores down from Apple – 4000 sq ft

Apple Store La Jolla/University City Mall – Fairly tony upscale area bounded by very tony La Jolla, rising neighborhoods of 500k homes and condos and the Golden Tiangle of Biotech and Tech. Qualcomm is pretty near by as are tons of biotech companies. 2000 sq ft

-----

Friday night:

About 7:30 Fashion Valley Mall – parking lot 75 – 80% full

Microsoft store about 40% of the people compared to the the pretty full Apple store.

Apple store about 80% packed as compared to pre Xmas 100% packed.

8:00 Best – sparcely attended – saw a couple of people shopping phones – 3 people signing their lives away to Verizon, they are having a sale free phones with 2 year sign up, I’m assuming the signers are buying Android or Microsoft phones – Apple products available no apparent lookers now. About 10 to 15 people looking at Windows laptops while I looked at flat screen TVs.

8: 20 Apple store La Jolla Parking lot 70% full – store about 60 - 70% full. I’m assuming because it was getting late.

=====

Satuday Afternoon:

2PM Best – More people, not TOO busy – saw about 5 people shopping phones – 4 people signing their lives away to Verizon. Several people looking at Apple products. Five people looking at accessories - mostly iPhone accessories like speaker systems.

2:30 Fashion Valley Mall parking lot 90% full – This time I sat in front of Microsofts store for 10 minutes and Apples for 10 watching for people carrying out phones etc. I also took time to count (smart) phones average shoppers were carrying – I estimate 50% iPhone/50% other.

Microsoft store – about the same as the night before maybe 40% full. Did not see any products leaving store in 10 minutes. Assuming people gawk then buy else where.

Apple store about 90% packed compared to Xmas shoppers. Pretty full. Lots of traffic in and out. In 10 minutes I saw these walk out:
1 iPhone
1 iPad mini – this guy started opening iPad package immediately, like a kid with a new toy he couldn't wait, he was also an iPhone user though he didn't buy it from the store.
1 iPad
1 laptop and a soft case
1 keyboard
6 bags of unknown apple gear (approximately) leave. Since I saw iPads and iPhones leave without Apple bags I’m guessing that maybe 2 more iPads or iPhones left (in other bags like Nordstrom) during my watch. Seems Apple store employees are conscious about not forcing plastic bags on people. It seemed obvious that at least a couple were in 3rd party bags or purses.

3PM Apple store La Jolla/University Mall Parking lot 80% – My informal poll of mall shoppers with phones here was something like 3:1 or possibly 4:1 in favor of Apple. More money = more likely to buy Apple. Store itself was pretty well packed about 80%. I’m assuming more of these shoppers buy online. Did not stick around to watch products move out, assuming they are doing pretty well too.

-----

I also questioned three Apple sales people. La Jolla had stock of everything… probably, did not get definitive answer. Fashion valley was out of 16Gb cell iPad mini only. Asked if iPad and iPhones were selling like hotcakes – smile and a yes.

I’m thinking or maybe hoping? Apple’s supply chain is now keeping up pretty much and they are selling the shit out of stuff. It may be a blessing in disguise they have enough product – because they were out of the one iPad mini model it seems to me they might keep just enough on hand at each store almost like retail JIT.

I hate my Apple keyboard. Worst ever.
