Back when Bob was here, I suggested that there might be some value in following in the footsteps of the other social media sites.

There is a built in user base and there is a built in topic. Facebook started off as a university student pickup joint. Myspace had a music focus. Linkedin has a work experience focus. Silicon investor has an investment focus.

The community at SI is a huge part of the allure of the website, but it hasn't been the driving force to bring in members. The user interface is slick. For me, it was the way information is organized, the visual appearance and how I click my mouse that has kept me here over the years. Hopefully Craig keeps this in mind when he endeavors to exploit the great opportunity that is before him.

If Craig's goal is to monetize SI, which is a reasonable goal, he has limited options. Charging for subscriptions won't work....he'll know that there are plenty of other free sites where people could go. So he's got to come up with user interface changes that are more attractive to more users. And there will need to be apps and ads to fund the place.

I hope that he keeps the community alive.
