How do they get to the criminals?

Usually crime guns are stolen or borrowed from friends according to CDC and FBI stats. They aren't buying them from gun shows or dealers at shops and filling out form 4473 or passing NICS checks. That's why databases of registered guns are so ineffective - the criminal very rarely drops a gun that can be traced to them. When the gun is left at the scene it's because the criminal couldn't leave - i.e. wounded and the database is not needed to identify them.
