Some weird numbers from China.

For the first time ever, China Mobile appears to have added less subs than China Unicom during December.

chinamobileltd.com

chinaunicom.com.hk

China Mobile added roughly 3 million subs which is down from the 5.5 million or so that they were averaging in the first half of the year and throughout 2011. The odd part is that China Unicom didnt seem to get a subscriber boost but saw sub growth (3.1 million) in line with previous months.

China Telecom has yet to report their numbers but it would be odd if they saw a huge jump in net adds while not seeing something similar at China Unicom.

Regardless, expect to read quite a few stories wondering what is wrong with China Mobile. I am not sure if the iPhone actually caused the drop in net adds at CM, but regardless, weakness at CM is positive for Apple.
