Brumar, it's the same reason why we have TSA security checkpoints even though they probably don't stop too many terrorists.

We need to have some measure of security and control over firearms in this country. It's not something you can quantifiably measure in terms of crime statistics, and it's probably going to make things rather inconvenient for existing gun owners, but it can help make it more difficult for criminals to illegally obtain firearms.
