Apple already sells a cheaper model, the legacy models. Its not the phone its the plans. It seems to me that strategy is a very good strategy. Components get cheaper. There are no development costs. Apple can lean on their suppliers a little. Why would they design a completely separate cheapo phone? It seems to me the cost of designing developing a cheap smaller plastic phone would outweigh any cost savings. The only fly in this ointment is how far back they update iOS for legacy phones.
