I live in CT and have watched the debate unfold since the Newtown shooting.

Everyone seems to be quickly forgetting Pettit home break in, also in a Connecticut suburb, Cheshire. Two armed robbers in 2007 followed the wife and daugher home from a grocery store. Broke in, beat the husband, raped and murdered the wife and two daughers (I think one was only 11 or maybe 13 with the older daugher only 16 or 17).

The perps took the wife to a bank to withdraw money and she notified a teller she was being held hostage. The police then set up a perimiter around the house. By the time they did this the perps did their work (rape, murder and set the house on fire) and the police stopped them as they were driving away from the house.

Now I'm not saying Dr. Petit would have prevented the break if he had a weapon since they woke him up as he was napping but he might have been able to use it after he broke free versus climbing out of the basement window and going to a neighbors for help. He was in pretty bad shape as they beat him with a bat and if he was still in the house at the end I'm sure they would have killed him as well.

The police are fine but one must remember they usually don't prevent the crime. They provide a false sense of security which unfortunately most don't realize until the s*** really starts hitting the fan.

In my town, another CT suburb they have had two armed break ins in the last 6 months. No severe injuries and they robbers have not been captured.
