That money would have been circulating in the economy anyway, as Bastiat so aptly described. You're taking money out of the hands of productive people and giving it to non-productive people. A small amount of this in the interest of "helping people out" may make sense (although, I would argue that NO ONE should be "given" money without having to even show up for work -- unless they were just radically and totally disabled). But we should not do it in the mistaken belief that it in some way helps the economy. It doesn't, it clearly doesn't, and it hasn't in the past and won't in the future. When you take dollars out of the productive economy and fork them over to the nonproductive one, it obviously hinders more than it helps. One of us doesn't understand this -- but it is you, not me.
