It was the War of 1812 that caused them to toss in the towel. The burning of the White House was a bit too much. the militias did ok in there own states. Not great against the British troops, but ok. Not so much out of it. Plus they had a habit of just vanishing at night. These were farmers for the most part. Leaving their farm for any length of time was an unanticipated problem.
