LOL...well, I admit I didn't read the questions thoroughly this morning or check out the link I was in a rush. Dry string...what do I know of string theory or membranes particles or wavelength motions of protons and electrons? well what was the humidity? What type of fibers were used was it a simple twine what...LOL, was it made of hemp...plants like us carry water and electrical charges...I'm no expert at anything. Lots of electrons in the air I assume when given the chance to flow along something they might condense in a fashion what would I know. You know it wanted to discharge somewhere was he out in a big open field with no other trees or structures? Metal we all know attracts lightning and is a conductor, Was he near salt water spray of the ocean? It could be a fairy tale but I believe Ol' Ben was a bit of an alchemist he seemed to get around and he seemed to be connected..maybe his magnetic personality....why do people get struck by lightning? I've heard some people get struck 3 or 4 times I must remember this as I'm thinking this story was of a women who kept getting struck standing in front of a window over the sink in her kitchen...was she doing dishes? I don't recall more than that.

So when you are holding a fishing pole even though it has plastic wet line or sometimes a fiber braid. It is basically a polymer resin tube little or no metal in eyelets and reel. You are not particularly grounded sitting on water? Was Ben standing on wet soil? I don't see the relativity to as to how long his string would get wet by rain drops other than I imagine it would be rather quickly with the wicking action of a single large droplet. What would have happened if Ben was standing on a buckboard wagon with rubber tires while his kite was struck, does it even matter. All I know is Ben was conductive and electric charges can jump even from the key to him not necessary to flow through string?

Notice the pattern around this coil, why are their bolts pointing up to the sky?

This picture shows clear lines of energy flow, nice spacing pattern

Let me know if you come up with
any shocking bright ideas.
