since it's been about four days since i asked the question, i think it's safe to say a few things..

1) you didn't take the easy way out and run to the 'english oxford dictionary'. obviously, you decided to give it some thought.

2) dictionaries while highly useful, usually only give cursory definitions at best, and thesaurus like definitions at worst. thus many if not most words in dictionaries don't have very accurate definitions. we use them because they are literally better than nothing.

3) the definition of greed isn't as easy as you presumed it would be at first. it's hard to get a definition to fit all the aspects of a word.
