3Com Corporation Rated Number One in Leading Test For Remote Access Systems
SANTA CLARA, CALIF. (Dec. 3) BUSINESS WIRE -Dec. 3, 1997--3Com
Corporation (NASDAQ:COMS) announced that an InternetWeek magazine
review of high speed access systems named 3Com's Total Control(TM)
remote access concentrator the winner over other vendors, including
Ariel Corp., Ascend Communications and Multi-Tech Systems.
InternetWeek magazine, in its November 3rd issue, confirmed 3Com's
strong leadership position in the remote access market by giving the
Total Control system its overall top grade.
The Total Control system had the best overall performance and met or
exceeded all of InternetWeek's other criteria, according to the
editors. "We found 3Com's x2(TM) technology quite adept at handling
our test files and line noise. And with one of the largest installed
bases in the world, the x2 technology's instant compatibility with
millions of U.S. Robotics(R) modems is guaranteed." Additionally,
compatibility with 3Com Megahertz(R) PC Card x2 modems also is assured.
In addition, InternetWeek editors wrote: "3Com was the first vendor to
ship an end-to-end 56K solution and it shows -- the Total Control
system put in the most consistent performance scores of the bunch."
They described the longer availability of x2 technology over K56flex as
making a difference.
"...(Total Control) proved it has the greatest noise-handling
capability by posting the best scores when we introduced line noise. It
also clocked in with the fastest clean-line connection speed at 50.66
Kbps."
Furthermore, InternetWeek recommended to its readers that when users
start implementing remote access servers in corporate environments,
they need high port counts and fault tolerance, as well as rock-solid
performance. "You get all that and more with 3Com's Total Control
remote access concentrator."
As a key part of the InternetWeek test, the servers in the review were
required to handle at least 24 56 Kbps modem sessions and have an
integrated T1 and channel service unit/data service unit (CSU/DSU).
Other significant requirements include remote management, monitoring
and configuration for all ports.
The Total Control remote access concentrator is a flexible, universal
service platform that can support a wide range of services. It is
designed for carriers, ISPs and corporate enterprises that need to
support a very large number of remote users or Internet subscribers.
With its HiPer(TM) DSP technology, the Total Control platform offers
one of the highest densities in the market. Additionally, the platform
is fully software upgradable. Besides its high density, the Total
Control platform also supports a wide range of existing and new
applications including Internet and remote access, full routing
support, voice over IP (VOIP), multimedia and virtual private
networking (VPN). Nine of the 10 largest ISPs and online services have
standardized on the Total Control platform.
"3Com Corporation is committed to providing leading edge solutions for
our carrier customers," said Ross Manire, senior vice president, 3Com
Carrier Systems. "Towards this end, the Total Control platform
incorporates all the key attributes required for large scale, flexible
deployment that maximizes our customers' investment today and protects
it for the future."
Today, more than 1,200 Internet Service Providers have deployed x2
technology in more than 11,000 cities worldwide. Total Control system
users were able to easily upgrade their networks to x2 technology
through a simple software download and beat to market their 56 Kbps
technology competitors who use third party hardware-based chipsets
instead of 3Com's x2 technology.
