greed [greed] Show IPA noun excessive or rapacious desire, especially for wealth or possessions. My example regarding the CEO is actually a better definition of greed than your man walking off with a newspaper. I don't think someone "should be excused from theft because he has little money". I do find it offensive that a poor man steals a $100 he gets more jail time than a corporate CEO that steal hundreds of millions.
