However if you look at Zillow link cited ( zillowblog.com ), SoCal looks pretty red, so it would go against the argument.

Edit: Also note Sarasota. :) 41% free and clear ownership rate did not save it from RE crash. ;)

Prices went down in SF and LA as well. It just explains how prices stay high in certain areas.
