I agree with that. However, what we need to strive for is to achieve that intellectual growth, with preparation for the young person to stand on their own economically when they graduate with a Bachelor's. Today, we are failing in that task and encouraging many people to get degrees that will not help them stand on their own. Education is also about growing up and taking responsibility for oneself.

If you follow Maslow's Hierarchy of needs, then you might agree we need to make sure we teach our kids to take care of the foundational items first, so they will then have more free time to engage in the mind expansion things. Did you know that I am a big believer in meditation and took many courses on mediation during my Bachelor's? I have a great respect for Buddhism, and although I am a Catholic, I believe there are many good things in all sorts of religions and a few bad things in Catholicism. A friend of mine and myself lived in an Ashram for awhile. I have a very interesting aspects of my life that have helped me grow as a person. However, I never ignored the temporal, secular needs of growing up. I have become self-sustaining.

That is what we need to teach our children. They need to be well rounded and take care of themselves. Don't become blood suckers who leech off of others. Becoming self-sustaining is the very essence of showing respect for your fellow beings. Never take and never steal from others, unless its in a moment of need and what you take was freely given and you have every intent to return what you took with interest.
