"all sorts of "disasters" can happen that couldn't happen before" Your crop disease thing is hypothetical but there are REAL things happening that have never happened before. You've heard about the recent ineffectiveness of antibiotics? Well, did you know that the Chinese have only recently discovered them? They never had money for them before but now they do and they are using them with abandon. They are injecting them into newborns for various maladies (not necessarily for ones they'd be useful for). The drug companies don't want to waste money developing new ones because it doesn't pay that well. They're looking hard (pun intended) for the next Viagra, but antibiotics don't make the big bucks. Global Warming seems to be a REAL thing too (whether it's manmade or do to sunspots or whatever) and it's changing our climate. It will cut food production and cause droughts and kill a lot of people and probably cause some wars (just over water rights). Eventually it may lead to a mass kill off of most of us. It's killing our oceans as I type. Then there's the Middle East moving to Fundamentalism. Etc., etc., etc.......
