Social Security should be viewed as an insurance policy that you pay for in order to protect yourself in the event of catastrophic poverty. You pay for fire insurance but you don't collect anything if your house doesn't burn down.
Agree, it ought to be insurance. But that was not the deal - it is supposed to be more like a pension. Rich, poor - everyone was supposed to get the monthly payments upon reaching a certain age and retirement. So far it's holding up, but looks like they'll have to start changing rules in mid game.

I'm not averse to the idea of forced savings, no matter how "un-libertarian" it may be. Except that the political fools didn't structure it right - and didn't protect the funds from their own hunger for spending and for buying votes.
