Drills for some, understanding for everyone. It really does not work that way. Drills, skills, abilities come before understanding, especially deep understanding. As skills and knowledge grow, things start to click.
I can see this especially in how "Science" is thought in the US, compared to how I was thought (in Slovakia). Of course, we did not have gibberish filled, but beautiful, picturesque "Science" books. We had Physics, Chemistry. We learned simple equations, applied them to real life. We learned "how", and things eventually clicked as to "why".
It doesn't, and I venture to say, it can't work the other way around.
There may be some people with simpler minds, for whom it will never click as to "why", but they still will know more likely to know how to do things...

I don't think republicans fall for messianic heroes. I was ok with GWB at the beginning, less so after he started the war in Iraq, and even less so after he failed to lead and tackle the budget issues, which are greater threat than the islamists... |
