OT - Quick question about base MacBook upgradability

- friend asked for help in buying a replacement for a 5 year old black plastic MacBook that was recently killed by a spilled coffee (second disaster of the day, first was a minor flood)

- probably going to get the almost-base MacBook with 4 GB memory and 750GB HD. Base model has 500GB HD, the 750 GB HD raises the price about $100 which is acceptable (unfortunately they don't sell the base MB with a 1TB HD)

Question: for the base MB can the memory and HD be fairly easily upgraded by the end-user? If so he might upgrade the HD himself in a year or so.

He has previously done a lot of travel photography and was interested in the Retina MB, but probably just going to get the base MB because his primary computer use recently has been minimal - WWW news, etc.
