Art,

The study points to the high costs of digital TV and high-definition TV as the main culprit in squashing demand for the new technologies over the next five years. According to the study, of the 12 million people expected to use digital TV in the next 10 years, nearly two-thirds will use a digital converter box of some sort, nearly a third will purchase digital TVs and only 8 percent will buy an HDTV set.

From the article you posted, I read the converter box as taking the digital signal and converting it back into an analog signal for use with the standard TVs we have now Digital TV -- primarily converter boxes for standard TVs -- will dominate the market over the next ten years, said analysts at market research firm SRI Consulting. This may be true for most of the world population but not here in the US--think we will be at the forefront again with HDTV sets. The price, as in all existing cases, will come down with volume and make it affordable for most. I think their numbers of 12 million people using digital TV over the next 10 years is way off of the mark--think it will be at the very least an order of magnitude greater than that. They forgot to take into consideration how fast things are changing. A lot of different ways to go--use a converter box to take the analog signal we now have -and convert it to a digital format using a set-top converter for use with a digital TV--this can also be done, or take the digital feed and convert it back to an analog signal again using a set-top converter box. It will be interesting to see how well and fast the transition is made.
