Steve,
What do you think gun free zones are all about?
I know most gun owners are law-abiding citizens, but it makes me nervous to be around one whom I know is currently carrying a firearm. It's not clear to me whether that person has the right training and attitude necessary to wield one responsibly.

Also in the places where I grew up, carrying a firearm in public usually meant you're a gang member, a wannabe gang member, or otherwise dealing in drugs. Those who did own and shoot firearms on a regular basis usually kept their hobbies in shooting clubs, on the hunting range, or anywhere else out of the public eye.

I never really bought into the argument that people (other than off-duty officers) would want to carry around a firearm in public for self-defense. We don't live in a war zone, unless you live in Chicago or Detroit. Why live life as if you do?

That's what a "gun-free zone" means to me. It's not a sign that says, "Hey assholes, come over here and shoot up the place, we won't fire back!" It's a sign that says, "We choose not to make this make a war zone."
