I guess my point is that "it is not a permanent expense and it should pay off" is not really true. They will have some boom with Gorilla Glass (maybe a small one only?) and then this will be a bust too and they will need to invent/build something new again.

Sure, it might be a good investment for year or two if LCD bust is over and GG boom is beginning. But it's not going to be a good long term holding unless they somehow learn get out of the boom/bust product cycles. Although perhaps this only matters to me as someone who is contemplating GLW as a long-term hold. For 1-2 year investment it might work well.
