Eric,
You've twisted the analogy - carrying a gun for self defense is insurance.

Comparing a gun to, say, car or home insurance makes no sense. They work in different ways.

Car and home insurance is meant to compensate you monetarily after you've lost property.

A gun is meant to stop a human being before he takes any (more) lives. But that's totally at the discretion of its wielder.
