Apple's could go down to 10 and there would still be enough developers

I wouldn't take be so blasé about that. Market share is important as it affects mind share. When someone asks which is the most popular phone, you want the answer to be iPhone. IMO, this enhances the desirability of the product -- for better or worse, lots of people buy a product based on its popularity. Also, developers are likely to develop for the most widely used products first -- remember the dark days when Mac OS was an afterthought for the likes of Adobe, Autodesk, et al. You don't want a repeat with iOS, however unlikely that may seem. As they say, never say never.
