Microstar Software Ltd. Introduces XML Internet Transaction Development Technology

OTTAWA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 3, 1997--(TSE:MSS. - news) Targeted at Internet electronic commerce applications. Microstar Software Ltd., the leading XML/SGML solutions provider will introduce ActiveSG/XML (TM) at the SGML '97 conference in Washington, D.C., December 8-11. ActiveSG/XML (TM) is a rapid transaction development technology for the new Internet information markup standard - XML. XML is to document-based transactions what HTML is to document-based presentations. It is the key to implementing applications such as electronic commerce on the internet. Within an XML transaction, the contents are so precisely described that computers can process the coded information without human intervention. Smart agents and future search engines can look into documents to unprecedented levels of detail and extract exactly the information the user wants. This is not practical with HTML. Applications created using XML can migrate to the more powerful SGML without loss of investment.

Microstar's ActiveSG/XML (TM) technology leverages Document Object Model (DOM) and Component Object Model (COM) technologies to enable rapid design and deployment of ActiveX controls for internet transactions. These smart XML-aware controls can be embedded in HTML pages or can be used standalone. ActiveSG/XML (TM) is broadly applicable to electronic commerce, online surveys, and corporate MIS applications.

User's do not need to learn the XML language to use Microstar's XML solution. Near & Far(R) Designer, Microstar's powerful XML information modeling tool, is used to visually create the transaction structure and content. The XML model (DTD) is transformed automatically into an XML aware ActiveX control without writing any C++ code. The resulting ActiveX control can create, retrieve and dynamically validate XML transactions using the familiar Internet Explorer interface. Distribution of controls as well as Microstar's XML support components is transparent to the end user. Modifications to the base control and user interface can be achieved with widely used developer tools. To assist in the adoption of XML, Microstar is making an XML parser freely available on its Web site.

''Our ActiveSG/XML (TM) technology leverages the power of Near & Far Designer to provide a rapid development environment for deploying and supporting robust XML transactions. It supports an array of widely accepted component technologies within an XML-compliant framework,'' said Peter Jordan, Microstar's Chairman & CEO. ''Such innovative technology is key to ensuring XML is quickly and widely accepted for real business solutions,'' Mr. Jordan said.

Microstar provides solutions comprised of software and services that enable Global 2000 companies to create, manage and distribute their corporate knowledge assets. The company has grown as a result of the innovative standards-based solutions and technology tools it provides for document and transaction management. Microstar Software Ltd. is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange (MSS).
