Background checks are indeed only a start -- a basic safety training course should be required for new gun owners -- simple stuff like don't let you children play with a loaded gun, and know how to use one if the need arises. More than anything, people need to have the research on the risks and benefits of gun ownership. The NRA fights tooth and nail against anything that would lower gun deaths -- including background checks and research on gun violence. They don't want people to know the truth about guns. They fear threat an educated population would not want so many of them lying around the house where their children will play with them like toys and kill themselves, or have a teenage momemt where a family fights turns murderous, or a bad day at the office turns into a suicide -- and they are right to come to that conclusion.
