Dear Jeffrey,

I'm curious how you, and some others might feel about the merits of this change I'm experimenting with to deal with our recent spam problem:

SI will disable hyperlinks in messages from new accounts until a certain "observation" period has elapsed. This period would be well more than long enough for SI members to note whether the messages are spam or not. Once the grace period is up, the hyperlinks in those messages would work.

If reported and verified, the account is roasted.

Here is an example:

1) A post from a regular SI user:

siliconinvestor.com

2) The exact same post from a new account, before its observation period is up:

siliconinvestor.com

After the observation period is up, the post (2) would automatically change to match post one. In fact, post two really is post one. Here is the proof:

http://www.siliconinvestor.com/readmsg.aspx?msgid=28727361

This hasn't been fully implemented and tested, but it seemed a decent point to seek member feedback.

Regards,

@Dima

P.S. I have devised in my mind additional countermeasures if this doesn't do the trick.
