MRI Documents Reversal Of AIDS Dementia With Protease Inhibitors

CHICAGO, Dec 03 (Reuters) - At the 83rd Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America, researchers presented new evidence that protease inhibitors can halt the progression of HIV-encephalopathy.

The study is the first to demonstrate the impact of the new HIV drugs on AIDS dementia, said study co-author Dr. Christopher G. Filippi, assistant professor of radiology and director of neuroradiology at Weiler Hospital, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York.

Magnetic resonance imaging scans of 16 AIDS patients showed that of nine who received protease inhibitors, four showed stabilization of HIV-encephalopathy, four showed near complete regression and one showed slight progression. Six of seven patients not on protease inhibitors showed progression, and one exhibited no change.
