There is enormous demand for fiat currency which is why governments around the globe are running the presses full time to meet it. Paper currency has the unique characteristic that the more you make, the more valuable it becomes. People realize the intrinsic value of paper money and demand it in increasing quantities which is why more of it is being supplied. It's basic economics, really. If you had a printing press and you could print $100. You would have $100. If you then print $1,000,000, you have $1,000,000, which is worth more than $100. The additional supplies needed to print $1MM cost you $5 so you just created enormous value with great efficiency. Gold on the other hand has no utility and limited demand which is why they stopped making it a long time ago.
