That depends, in its entirety, on whether 3D printing applications come along that can make current manufacturing processes cheaper and/or better. It is likely that it can and it will.

If you show businesses a way to make products better at lower cost, they'll flock to a new technology, almost overnight. The problem this instant is that these devices are slow and the range of materials is limited, but it is difficult to imagine this pothole will persist for long.

I haven't read the book, but it sounds like the guy is underestimating the business end of 3D printing if you ask me.
