The US has more guns per capita than any other major nation but it's homicide rate is quite moderate, around half that of the other major northern power, Russia, which has almost no private gun ownership. No, the homicide rate is due to social or culture factors. Different societies have different homicide rates. But you can't get good statistics on the "society" that a person is a member of. The nearest thing you can get is their race. And indeed, when examined in terms of race, the high levels of homicide in the US correlate nicely with the areas with high numbers of racial minorities. You can look across the border at Mexico and see the same thing. They have a homicide rate around 5x that of the US. And sure enough, the US states close to Mexico also have rates higher than the US average. None of this should be a surprise. The reason people bring up "race" is to shut the other side down. It's a matter of redirecting the argument when you don't have the numbers to back up your version of reality. -- Carl P.S. I don't have the numbers immediately in front of me, but I'd be willing to bet that the homicide rate for whites living in high minority areas is much higher than the rate for whites as a whole in the country. It's not about race, the homicide rate is about culture. It just happens that race is a convenient way of tracking culture differences. I have no doubt that college educated people have a lower homicide rate. That's not because college teaches people to be non violent. It's because people with a non violent culture are more inclined to work their way through college.
