The entire CEO pay issue can be clarified with a simple example:

Tim Cook is currently the highest paid CEO in America, at something like $400 Million.

If a person with verifiably the precise skills Steve Jobs had appeared in Cupertino and said, "I'll take the job for $800 Million", should Apple pay that?

The answer, of course, is in a heartbeat. If they could have Steve Jobs back for $800 Million who on Earth would deny that it would be an excellent deal for the company, shareholders, and consumers?

I'd bet you can point to other examples -- probably some at Intel, [arguably] Gates at Microsoft, and for that matter, the small microwave engineering firm I worked for back in the 70s.

The value of a CEO to a business is no different from the value of David Gilmour to Pink Floyd or a major quaraterback to Superbowl winning team. Yet, no one is arguing we should limit the amount of money Gilmour could be compensated should he decide a reunion is in order.

You just can't put a price on some of these things. And that's where the Z's of the world go totally wrong.
