Rand, I don't want to defend the pe ratio but I seriously wonder if annalysist have made a study of what the earnings will be with the addition on Chauvco. Also most of these O&G exploration co's are valued on cash flow not earnings. The following is from Yahoo.

The Proxy Statement issued in connection with PXD's acquisition of Chauvco states that Goldman Sachs identified 7 other oil/gas companies "with operations . . . that may be considered similar to" PXD. Those 7 companies are: APA, APC, BR, EOG, ORX, UPR and VRI. The charts of these stocks show declines similar to that of PXD in recent weeks (although ORX held up better until recently). PXD may have superior
management (as I think it does), but it still will be impacted by oil/gas sector moves. I don't think the merger is a factor in this correction.>
