Actually, the Islanders did not play well at all. They got lucky. Lucky because they found themselves in a hockey game late in the second period after they failed to show up in the first period again. Outshot 14-3, hardly able to clear the puck out of their zone and down again on the first shot of the opposition. Islander fans have seen this act many times before. This game was on the verge of being mailed in by the Islanders, but because they have the best road power play play in the league, they woke up after the second Moulson power play goal, late in the second period and realized that this was a winnable game.

Montreal stood around in the third period and thought they could sit on a one goal lead. The way you beat the Islanders is to forecheck and backcheck them relentlessly. The teams in their division know that all to well. The Islanders have one of the better skating teams in the league, so if you give them open ice, they'll score goals and beat you. Lots of teams out West don't backcheck or forecheck well, so the Islanders do well against them.

Finishing your checks is the name of the game in the playoffs. Defense wins. Montreal skates well, but doesn't check well enough to go anywhere in the playoffs, let alone get out of round one.

As for the Isles, they are not a playoff team. They need a few big hardhitting defensemen. Lots of individual talent, but no team to speak of yet.
