My Wife's a Catholic teacher.

She doesn't have a union and she doesn't make much money but she's dedicated to teaching.

If there's something wrong with her school they have volunteers (including teachers) come in to fix it.

I know that's "extreme" and probably wouldn't work with today's teachers in public schools, but wouldn't it be NICE if public school teachers could act a little more like my Wife?????

On the contrary in the more affluent public school districts, parents volunteer to help at the school. Some parents chip in and buy musical instruments or extra computers. Unfortunately that does not happen in the poorer school districts where the need is greatest. There........single mothers working or otherwise preoccupied and are unavailable. Many of the kids in the poorer districts have virtually not support structure. They need all that help they can get at school.

This country has a serious problem in our poorer school districts. More than half the black boys in Chicago drop out of school by the tenth grade in a country that is producing less and less white children. The dropout rate for Latino boys is only slightly better. These will be the adults of the future that will be expected to fun this country.
