"that does not happen in the poorer school districts" WHY does that not happen? Maybe because they don't require parents to pay attention to their kids? Maybe because competent teachers are stuck in a union controlled conglomerate of mediocrity or worse? Because many families in the poorer districts are single parent and that parent is working.....usually in more than one job. In New York (and many other places) they have to go through hoops to fire ANYBODY, incompetent or not. What's true in NY is not true everywhere else. And no matter what the system, every profession has some workers who are better than others. Do you think all nurses are equal in their performance? Architects? Engineers? Lathe operators? No. You can't expect every teacher to perform like the ones we glorify in film. Unfortunately, given the way the system is set up now, teachers have to be extraordinary to get thru to the kids in poorer districts. They send lousy teachers to centers where they sit around for 8 hours a day because union contracts won't let them fire anybody. That's your imagination running wild. I never seen a teacher here where I live who has it easy. Usually they are overworked and underpaid for the educational accomplishments required of them. That's NOT to say I dislike unions. As long as unions are their to "protect" workers from UNFAIR practices and not to to give them a status that is antithetical to reasonable practices in the workplace then I am ALL for them. My Wife could USE a union that would protect her basic rights and she has none. They can fire her at any time without recourse. She wouldn't get a pension and I don't think they'd even spring for a gold watch. That's right. And that is what's happening more and more in this country.........in every profession. Because labor has become expendable in the global economy.
